What is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure done to reshape the nose, either for cosmetic reason or functional improvement

What is the ideal age for rhinoplasty?

  • Cosmetic rhinoplasty can be performed any time after 16-17 years, when nasal growth is complete. However, an emotionally and socially mature patients is an essential requirement for rhinoplasty.
  • Best time to perform is in the mid to late adolescence.
  • Rarely surgery may be performed at younger age when severe impairment dictates

What are the common indications for cosmetic rhinoplasty?

Common rhinoplasty includes the nose, shortening the nose, reducing the bridge of nose, tip contouring, lifting a droopy tip, hump reduction, saddle deformity correction and others.

Tell me about Pre-Procedure planning for rhinoplasty?

  • During your firs visit, the surgeon will assess your physical fitness and maturity for undergoing the procedure.
  • During subsequent visits, your surgeon will explain with photos, what need to be done to your nose and the most appropriate method to do it.
  • It is important that you discuss with your surgeon about what you need and also what surgeon feels what you need and come to a realistic expectation for better satisfactory outcome.

Can I change mu nose to any shape I wish?

  • Practically no. Thee shape of nose is affected by gender, ethnicity, culture, personal preference, height, facial features (Chin, forehead).
  • A realistic expectation from proper Pre-Procedure counselling will help to achieve a desired nose.

What can I expect during rhinoplasty?

  • Rhinoplasty is usually performed under general anaesthesia and occasionally under local anaesthesia.
  • Your surgeon may make an incision across the bottom of your nose between the nostrils (open technique) or inside the nostrils (closed technique).
  • Your surgeon will remove, rearrange, and cartilage and also break and rearrange bone to reshape the nose.
  • Nasal Pack and nasal splint are applied.

What are the risks of rhinoplasty?

  • Rhinoplasty is a safe procedure. Risks include infection, adverse reaction to anaesthesia, bleeding, need for additional surgery in future.
  • Risk of cosmetic rhinoplasty is that you may be unhappy with the procedure. (Rhinoplasty has the height rate of revision in cosmetic surgery)

Tell me about the recovery time post rhinoplasty?

  • Nasal pack will be removed within 24-48 hours.
  • Nasal splint will remain 7-10 days.
  • There will be swelling, bruising around your eyes and nasal stuffiness for up to 2 weeks.

When can I resume my normal activities?

  • If your job is office based, you can resume work after a week
  • If your job involves lot of travelling and running around, you are advised to take rest for 2 weeks.
  • Strenuous activity should be avoided for one month.

Does the shape of my nose change over time?

The final result can take up to one year to appear. Scar tissue develops within the area of surgery in every patient and this change the shape of the nose little. This is normal part of healing.

Is the surgical outcome guaranteed?

  • Unfortunately, no.
  • Realistic preoperative discussions regarding the possible outcome of the proposed nose surgery ensures that your concerns are understood.
  • Each nose differs in the basic shape of cartilage, thickness of nasal skin and healing.

What is non- surgical rhinoplasty?

  • Non – Surgical rhinoplasty is reshaping the nose without surgery.
  • It is useful for mild cosmetic concerns, which can be camouflaged with dermal fillers in the office setting.
